WHERE TO DRINK IN AND AROUND FAKENHAM

Fakenham has no fewer than nine pubs to choose from in the town itself and there are many more to visit in the surrounding area. Lots of pubs in the region serve wonderful food and many specialise in seafood dishes and menus prepared with locally produced ingredients.

North Norfolk has a fine tradition for top quality barley growing and this finds its way into the amazingly broad spectrum of real ales produced by specialist Norfolk breweries. Look out for beers created by Norfolk breweries such as Woodforde's, Wolf, Buffy's, The Brancaster Brewery, The Iceni Brewery and Front Street.

PUBS IN THE TOWN

THE BULLThe Bull, Bridge Street

The Crown, Market Place
Hotel in the centre of town with restaurant and set-back decked and ballustraded outdoor seating area. Ever popular with locals, this is a former coaching inn built in 1738, which has been known as The Crown since 1795!

GARDEN HOUSEGarden House (Limes), Bridge Street
Recent renovations have taken place at this popular venue for Fakenham's youngsters who often spill out into the seating area at the front. Live music and DJs make it a lively place at the weekend.

The Henry IV, Greenway Lane
1950s building situated slightly away from the town centre. Greene King (Suffolk brewery) pub with Abbot and IPA ales on handpump. Integral Hungry Horse restaurant catering for families and kids. Sports themed with big screen TV.

GALLERY BISTROThe Gallery Bistro, Market Place
Trendy spot with a youngish clientele and outdoor cafe style seating. A taste of the continent on a Norfolk Market Square! Originally called The Red Lion in the 1700s, skilfully reconverted to a pub/bistro in 2000 after 30 years being used as council offices.

Wensum Lodge, Bridge Street
Real ales and a wide choice of wines. Restaurant and hotel, originally a grain store by the water mill, with lovely views by the river Wensum where you can sit and feed the ducks.

OAK INNThe Oak Inn
Oak Street
Restaurant pub in an imposing building formerly called Cawdron House, which used to be a wine merchants (The Vine pub, owned by the Cawdron family, stood here in the early 1900s). Check out the cool paved wine cellar eating areas, which make the place deceptively spacious.

The Rampant Horse, Queens Road
Popular and unpretentious pub with a youngish clientele. Large screen TV featuring scheduled football matches and a lively atmosphere with music at the weekends. Walled outdoor area to the side.

THE STARThe Star, Oak Street
Traditional pub which is recorded as being the oldest surviving pub in Fakenham - reputed to date from around 1600. Set back in a courtyard off this narrow but busy road.
