SCULTHORPE MOOR COMMUNITY NATURE RESERVE

Run by The Hawk and Owl Trust, this flagship reserve has been open since 2001 and is situated one and a half miles outside Fakenham just off the A148 road to King’s Lynn. LogoBrown signs indicate the turning into the reserve which covers 200 acres and is made up of a restored reed bed, wet woodland, dry woodland and a grazing meadows. There is a wide variety of wildlife to be seen there: Marsh Harriers nest in the reed bed during the summer, Willow Tits are found in the wet woodland, Water Voles and Otters can be seen in the dykes which criss-cross the reserve. Access around the reserve is by board-walk (accessible to all) and there are two hides (another will be completed by March 2008). Entry is free.

HideAt the entrance to the reserve is the new Education Centre which was opened by HRH The Princess Royal last September. As you enter the building you go into the Interpretation Room where there are a number of displays showing, for example, the history of the moor, the importance of the “web of life” and a map of the reserve with some of the wildlife that can be seen. There will always be a volunteer on duty who can answer your questions.

Guided WalkThere is a large activity room which will be used during term times to run special courses which will fit into national curriculum.

After school hours we will use this room in the evening and during the school holidays to stage events which we hope will be of interest to everyone.
